Understanding Prostate Adenoma
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), or prostate adenoma, is a common condition in men aged 50 and over.
⚠️It corresponds to a progressive increase in the volume of the prostate, leading to urinary problems: need to urinate more often, weak stream, impression of incomplete emptying, night waking, or even complications (acute urinary retention, infections, bladder stones, etc.).
Why consider minimally invasive treatment?
The goal: to preserve one’s sexuality (erections and ejaculations)
Traditionally, surgery (endoscopic prostate resection, adenomectomy) is offered when medication is no longer sufficient.
💡Minimally invasive techniques now offer an effective and less aggressive alternative to traditional surgery. They allow for faster recovery, a reduced risk of complications (bleeding, incontinence), and above all, the preservation of ejaculation , while significantly improving quality of life.
1. UroLift®
Principle : placement of small implants that mechanically separate the lobes of the prostate in order to free the urinary canal, without removing any tissue.
Benefits :
💡 Scientific results : lasting improvement in urinary symptoms and quality of life, with follow-up of more than 5 years in some patients.
2. Rezum™ (Water Vapor Therapy)
Principle : The Rezum™ technique uses the energy of steam injected directly into the prostate tissue. The steam destroys the adenoma cells, which are then gradually absorbed by the body.
Benefits :
💡 Special feature : after the procedure, the patient must keep a urinary catheter temporarily (on average 5 days) to allow good healing and avoid urinary retention.
💡 Scientific results : lasting effectiveness for up to 5 years, with a significant improvement in urinary flow and quality of life.
✅ Specialized consultation : symptom assessment, ultrasound, urinary flow measurement, blood test (PSA).
✅ Personalized therapeutic choice : according to the volume of the prostate, the patient’s expectations (in particular the preservation of sexuality), and medical history.
✅ Procedure : performed under light sedation, on an outpatient basis.
✅ Suites :
Men bothered by urinary problems related to BPH.
Those for whom drug treatments are ineffective or poorly tolerated.
Patients wanting a less invasive alternative to conventional surgery and concerned about preserving their sexual function.
Minimally invasive techniques such as UroLift® and Rezum™ offer comparable improvement in urinary symptoms for the majority of patients with moderately sized prostates.
They have the advantage of being less aggressive, with faster recovery, little risk of bleeding, and above all almost systematic preservation of sexual function.
On the other hand, for very large prostates (over 80 ml) classic laser surgery or endoscopic resection is sometimes more suitable.
On average 15 to 30 minutes depending on the technique.
In the majority of cases, the procedure is performed on an outpatient basis (discharge the same day).
The after-effects are generally simple. There may be burning sensations during urination, which can be relieved by appropriate treatment.
Yes, these techniques are designed to preserve erection and ejaculation, which is a major advantage over some conventional surgeries.
Yes, these procedures are covered, with a possible supplement depending on the conditions of your insurance or mutual insurance company.
